Trilateral Information Sharing Agreement

A major catalyst for this deterioration occurred in October 2018, when South Korea`s Supreme Court instructed Nippon Steel Corporation to pay compensation to South Koreans forced to work in their factories during Japanese colonization. A similar ruling was handed down in November at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of Japan. Amid this escalation of the legal battle, Japan removed South Korea from its white trade list in August 2019, even though Tokyo claimed it did so because of national security concerns about exports of highly sensitive materials to South Korea and not in retaliation for Supreme Court rulings. Seoul reacted in the same way by removing Japan from its own white trade list and then threatening to withdraw from the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), an intelligence information exchange pact with Tokyo.
